PAFMA

The inaugural conference of a pan-African fund managers alliance. No previous edition to reference, and a visual record that would become the alliance's first impression of itself.

The brief

PAFMA is a pan-African alliance bringing fund managers and market stakeholders together to strengthen the continent's investment ecosystem. Its inaugural conference convened fund managers, policymakers, regulators and development partners in Nairobi over two days.

An inaugural event carries a particular kind of pressure. There is no previous year to look at, no house style to inherit, no archive to fall back on if the coverage underdelivers. Whatever gets made becomes the reference — for the alliance's own website, for next year's edition, and for every member deciding whether this is a serious body worth belonging to.

A room of fund managers and regulators is also a room where nobody wants a camera in their face. The coverage had to be thorough and almost invisible at the same time.

The approach.

02

Three of us on site, split by job rather than by room: sessions covered continuously, delegates and side conversations picked up in parallel, and a dedicated interview setup running throughout for vox pops.

Images were catalogued by session and by day as they were shot, not sorted afterwards. That structure is what let daily highlights go out while the conference was still running — and it is the same structure the client's own gallery now uses, day by day.

The vox pops were the part that changed what the coverage could do. Around ten conversations recorded across the two days, cut into short solo pieces, capturing what delegates actually argued for rather than what the agenda said they would discuss. A conference programme records the topics. Vox pops record the positions.

The outcome.

03

The material didn't end up in a folder. It became the alliance's own website — day one and day two galleries published as separate collections, and the vox pops running as a standalone outcomes page rather than as decoration.

That is the useful test for conference coverage. Not whether the client liked the photos, but whether the client's team could build with them afterwards without asking for anything else.
